2019-2020 CHALLENGE:
Quilts with Words

Each year the Program Committee comes up with a challenge for members to enter and devotes the July meeting to viewing member's entries.

In a typical year, the Challenge entries are viewed and voted on by the members at the Guild meeting in July. Since the Pandemic-related restrictions prevent us from meeting indoors, the Program Committee has developed plans to hold the viewing as a tail gater in the Our Redeemer Parking Lot.  See details on the Challenge Quiltgater below.

QUILTS WITH WORDS: Challenge Guidelines

For this year’s Challenge, you will enter a quilt featuring WORDS. There are many ways to use words on quilts. They can be added with quilting, appliqué, embroidery, piecing, painting, printing, or other media, or they can be pre-printed on the fabric."

There are two categories: SMALL quilt, with no side longer than 40”, and LARGE quilt, with at least one side longer than 40”. (Example: a table runner measuring 20” x 60” would be a large quilt.)

Here are the rules:

1. The quilt must FEATURE words. One or more words must be an essential design element.

2. The quilt must be your own work, not purchased or received as a gift or inheritance.

3. The quilt must be quilted, bound, and labeled.

4. The label must include the following:

  • your name

  • year of completion

  • name of designer* (if not you)

  • name of quilter (if not you)

5. It must be entered in the correct size category, as above.

6. You must be a paid member of the guild to enter.

*Designer name required if you have used a pattern or otherwise copied someone else’s design.

Each size category will have a Viewer’s Choice prize of $50. In the case of any ties within categories, the Program Committee will break the tie with one vote.

QUILTGATER VIEWING OF CHALLENGE QUILTS
Monday, July 13, 2020 -- Our Redeemer Parking Lot

(RAIN DATE: Monday July 20, 2020)

The Challentge Quilts will be viewed at the Quiltgater (the OCQG version of a tailgater) on Monday, July 13, 2020, outdoors in the SOUTH Parking Lot of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. There won’t be an OCQG meeting inside that evening — come to the parking lot to see the Quilt Challenge entries and stay to visit after you vote for your favorites.

Here’s the Plan:
Everyone will ENTER the parking lot from the west, off of 1st Avenue.
Everyone will EXIT the parking lot to the north, onto Court Street.
This is to minimize traffic within the parking lot for the SAFETY of all.

There will be a church meeting that same night and its attendees will park in the upper lot off 1st Avenue (closest to the main entrance), so we cannot use that area.

ENTRANTS (those entering Challenge Quilts)
Plan to arrive between 6:30 and 6:45 pm so you can set up before Viewers arrive.

  • Enter parking lot from the west, off 1st Avenue.

  • Park as directed in the first 3 rows to the South of the church, using every other space (for social dis-tancing).

  • WEAR A MASK! and a NAMETAG (so we know who’s behind that mask).

  • Display your quilt(s) in your trunk, on your tailgate, or on the back of your car. You may want to use props like boxes or bags of mulch covered with a sheet; or wind a rope/clothesline around your trunk lid and hang your quilt using clothespins or office clips to secure.

  • Attach stick-on label (Mary Mockaitis will distribute them on site) to designate your quilt by size cat-egory and number. Linda Prybil will then record your Challenge Quilt number(s).

  • BRING YOUR OWN supplies to remember who you want to vote for…paper, pencil, pen, take pix on phone, make note on phone….

  • Give your Voice Vote to Linda Prybil before you leave — she’ll be dressed in a brightly colored Mu-Mu and a big red hat.

  • Bring your chair and a drink if you wish to stay and visit.

  • Maintain Physical Distance to be safe!

  • EXIT onto Court Street.

VIEWERS
Please wait to arrive until 6:50-7:15 pm to give the Entrants time and space to set up.

  • Enter parking lot from the west, off 1st Avenue.

  • Park as directed at the far South end of the lot.

  • WEAR A MASK! and a NAMETAG (so we know who’s behind that mask).

  • BRING YOUR OWN supplies to remember who you want to Vote for…..paper, pencil, take pix on phone, make note on phone…

  • Give your Voice Vote to Linda Prybil before you leave - she’ll be dressed in a brightly colored Mu-Mu and a big red hat.

  • Bring your chair and a drink if you wish to stay and visit.

  • Maintain Physical Distance to be safe!

VOTING will begin around 7:15 and close around 7:45.
Winners in each category will be announced on the night and in the following OCQG Newsletter along with pictures of the winners with their quilts.
Prize checks will be mailed to the winner in each category.

If you have a Challenge Quilt to enter but cannot attend, you may designate some-one to bring and display your quilt(s) for you. They must follow the same instructions as ENTRANTS. ***
